Never, ever, ask a professional proofreader or editor to review your manuscript for free. It’s highly unprofessional and comes off as rude, insulting and amateurish. If you don’t have the funds available to pay a legitimate proofreader, then it’s probably not the right time for you to be publishing your work. Do some research and get quotes from a few reputable proofreaders. Decide on an achievable budget that you are willing to spend for editing services and create a timeline for yourself as to when you’ll be able to spend it. But NEVER say things like “I’m low on funds, and I was hoping you would do it for free.” Actions such as this only show that you aren’t ready for the big leagues just yet.
